PVL 2025 Season 4 (Match 32): Mumbai Meteors qualify for Semi-Finals with win over Chennai Blitz

Hyderabad (Telangana) [India], October 23: Mumbai Meteors defeated the Chennai Blitz 16–14, 11–15, 15–12, 21–19 in the RR Kabel Prime Volleyball League powered by Scapia at the Gachibowli Indoor Stadium, Hyderabad, on Monday to book their place in the Semi-Finals. Mathias Loftesnes was named the Player of the Match for his outstanding performance.

Chennai setter Sameer immediately set the tone, directing his passes to Jerome Vinith and Luiz Perotto to spark the Blitz’s attack, while Mumbai captain Amit Gulia countered from the centre. Chennai defended strongly with middle blocker Azizbek in command, but Amit kept finding gaps through the defence. Mathias maintained the attacking pressure, and with Om Lad Vasant’s timely block, Mumbai clinched the first set.

Tarun spearheaded Chennai’s counter-attack in the second set, as the Blitz’s solid defence made it difficult for the Meteors to break through. Suraj Chaudhary’s confident block on Amit shifted the momentum, while Perotto’s super serve added more pressure on Mumbai. Despite a spirited fightback, Chennai held their composure to level the match.

Chennai’s libero T. Srikanth thrilled the crowd with his acrobatic defensive efforts, keeping several rallies alive. However, blocker Karthik’s reintroduction brought stability back to Mumbai’s defence. Petter Ostvik’s all-round play bolstered Mumbai’s rhythm, and despite intense service pressure from Perotto, the Meteors held their nerve. Loftesnes’ precise attack from the middle zone sealed the third set, putting Mumbai ahead once again.

In the fourth set, two crucial reviews went in Mumbai’s favour, strengthening their advantage. Perotto and Jerome continued to lead Chennai’s resistance, but at a vital moment, Karthik and Shubham combined for a crucial block on Tarun, giving the Meteors an important point. Hyderabad (Telangana) [India], October 17: The defending champions Calicut Heroes defeated the Kolkata Thunderbolts 15–10, 15–11, 15–12 in the RR Kabel Prime Volleyball League powered by Scapia – Season 4 at the Gachibowli Indoor Stadium, Hyderabad, on Friday, to register their first win of the season. Mohan Ukkrapandian was named the Player of the Match.

Shameemudheen continued his excellent form for Calicut, producing crucial blocks against Ashwal Rai and attacking effectively from the middle zone. Sustained service pressure from Ashok Bishnoi helped Calicut gain an early edge. Kolkata’s overseas star Matin Takavar replied with powerful spikes, but frequent service errors disrupted their rhythm and momentum.

Santhosh joined the offensive play for Calicut, allowing captain and setter Mohan Ukkrapandian to distribute the ball with precision and control. The pair of Vikas Maan and Shameem established a solid blocking line, making it difficult for Kolkata’s frontline hitters to break through.

As the match progressed, Calicut committed a few service errors, giving Kolkata a glimmer of hope. However, Pankaj Sharma’s cross-body spike sailed wide, enabling Calicut to take a 2–0 lead. Shameem continued to stand tall in defence, blocking fierce attacks from Rahul K. and maintaining Calicut’s dominance.

Despite accurate passing from reserve setter Jithin, the Thunderbolts were unable to capitalise on key attacking chances due to Calicut’s composed defence and sharp court positioning. Santhosh and Tharusha Chamath stayed consistent with their strikes as Calicut sealed a commanding 3–0 victory, bagging all three points.

Kolkata Thunderbolts now hold on to slim playoff hopes, with two matches remaining—against Hyderabad and Delhi. “We are known for comebacks, and we will bounce back from this defeat as well,” said Chairman and Principal Owner, CA Pawan Kumar Patodia.

In this contest of champions, the result proved to be a significant morale booster for the reigning champions, Calicut Heroes, who have endured a tough season so far in Season 4. The win over the inaugural champions, Kolkata Thunderbolts, reignited their confidence and momentum. With one match left—the Kerala Derby against Kochi Blue Spikers—team owner Safeer PT expressed his joy, saying, “This win is for the fans and supporters of Calicut Heroes. PVL 2025: Kolkata Thunderbolts strike Chennai Blitz with a thunderous win

Hyderabad (Telangana) [India], October 13: The Kolkata Thunderbolts produced a commanding performance to overpower the Chennai Blitz 15–11, 15–12, 15–13 in the RR Kabel Prime Volleyball League powered by Scapia at the Gachibowli Indoor Stadium on Saturday. Jithin N was adjudged the Player of the Match, while team captain Ashwal Rai received the Game Changer of the Match award.

At the post-match presentation, Jithin expressed his gratitude to the coaching and support staff, management, and his teammates for their consistent encouragement. Captain Ashwal Rai credited the collective effort, saying, “This trophy belongs to the entire team. We are all playing as a unit.”

Pankaj Sharma made an impact early on with sharp attacks for Kolkata, as the team focused on exploiting the middle zone through Matin Takavar. The Chennai side, lacking experience in that department, struggled to counter. Sebastian Geraldo marked his PVL debut with powerful spikes and precise receptions that added strength to the Thunderbolts’ attack.

Head Coach Naser Shahnazi seemed to have mastered the 15-point format, guiding the team effectively through successful reviews, super serves, and super points. Behind the scenes, the franchise’s management has built a strong core. Team Director Sumedh Patodia, an alumnus of IIM Ahmedabad, has been instrumental in shaping the Thunderbolts’ vision. “Our top priority is team culture, and our main focus is to develop volleyball talent across India,” said the young director.

Chairman and Principal Owner CA Pawan Kumar Patodia shared before the match that the players were emotionally charged. “Our team is bound like a family, and one of our senior members, Manager Nayan, has suffered a great personal loss. The players decided to dedicate their performance to him,” he said.

Chennai’s libero Shrikanth entertained the crowd with his acrobatic digs, but he met stiff resistance from Thunderbolts’ Libero Hari Prasad BS, who displayed exceptional reflexes throughout the match. “We are just getting into rhythm and improving with each game. Every day, we learn from one another,” said Hari, a three-year veteran with Kolkata Thunderbolts.

Ashwal Rai continued to impress in his new position, securing a crucial super point with a solid block against Luiz Felipe Perotto. While Chennai’s defence faltered, leaving gaps that Kolkata capitalised on, the Thunderbolts’ defensive setup remained rock-solid, frustrating every Chennai attempt to build momentum.

From setter Jithin’s flawless passes to Muhammed Iqbal’s precise blocking, Kolkata’s coordination was seamless, drawing loud cheers from over 500 fans in the stands. Ashwal’s all-round performance was well complemented by the team’s collective effort. Late substitute Suryansh Tomar provided the finishing touches with spirited play. “It’s an honour to play alongside such experienced players. The camaraderie this season has been exceptional,” Tomar said, reflecting on his return to the squad.

With this victory, Kolkata Thunderbolts climbed to third place on the points table, as more than one-third of the league stage matches have been completed. Their next challenge will be against the newest franchise, the Goa Guardians, known for their hard-fought five-set thrillers. The match will take place at 8:30 p.m. on Tuesday, October 14, 2025. Another win could take Kolkata a step closer to securing a semi-final berth in Season 4 of the PVL.
